Valladolid sera el nudo central de la red ferroviaria de velocidaad alta del Noroeste

Article Abstract:

The Spanish Ministry of Development has budgeted Pta 250,000mn for the high speed railway project between Madrid and Medina del Campo (Valladolid) which will connect with the rest of the Northwest part of the country. A tunnel for the line will have to be made through the Guadarrama mountains which could cost around Pta 100,000mn. The government is reportedly studying the option of building two tunnels because of traffic expectations, both for cargo and passenger traffic. Construction of the new line could begin in the year 2000, with the same safety mechanisms in place as for the Eurotunnel, handled by Japanese. To avoid cost maintenance of the tracks, the government is said to be planning to use tracks in sections (en placas), which are cheaper to maintain, although more costly.
