Vodafone reflects its dashing, daring CEO

Article Abstract:

Vodafone Group PLC's chief executive, Chris Gent, has been very busy now that the company has made a startling bid to acquire AirTouch Communications Inc. for more than $45 billion. Mr. Gent's corporate strategy, which he announced a few months after become CEO in 1997, involved the streamlining of distribution, the opening of company stores on busy shopping streets, and the earmarking of 35 million pound sterling ($57.9 million) for advertising and sponsorships. Mr. Gent also cut prices by 25% in order to increase subscriptions. Since his appointment, Mr. Gent has seen Vodafone's subscriber base grow from 4.2 million to 9.1 million today.

Poland, Germany are Hanson focus over the next year

Article Abstract:

Hanson PLC announced that it will focus its energies on markets in Germany and Poland over the next year. In the meantime, the company will continue its acquisition strategy in the US. Hanson is a building materials group based in the UK. The company posted financial results that were at the high end of what analysts expected for the first-half of 1999. Hanson spent 216 million pound sterling (323.6 million euros) since the beginning of 1999.
