PACKAGED TEA MARKET DROPS 8.3%

The domestic packaged tea market has declined by 8.3 percent between July-December 1998 after the government levied an excise duty of eight percent in the last Budget. The market share of the packaged tea declined by 7.7 percent in July to September 1998. The increase in the prices of the packaged tea has made consumers go for loose tea. The Tea Packeters Association of India has asked the government to withdraw the excise duty to protect the consumers and the industry. (rk)(m)
