WIRED UP FOR VOICE WARS

Article Abstract:

The government has permitted private operators to offer Internet services. Licence fees has been kept to minimum with no restrictions on the number of players. Nearly 32 private players have applied for the Internet Service Provider (ISP) licences. Satyam Infoway has commenced Internet services. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) which operates basic telephone services plans to offer Internet service to every telephone subscriber free of cost. Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd which presently holds monopoly for providing international call services is gearing up to meet competition in the Internet market. However India is yet to keep pace with the global telecom industry. As per estimates, around 2.9 million people are yet to get access to telephone connections and the telephone penetration in India is around 15 among every 1,000 individuals. (tsm)

ASSAM TEA COMPANY (ACL)

Article Abstract:

Assam Tea Company (ACL) has one of the oldest plantations globally and it owns and operates 18 tea estates located in upper Assam, Moran, Jorhat and Naogon. ACL has six subsidiaries with a presence in food, infrastructure and service based industries. During 1997-98, ACL posted an income of Rs1,240.9 million with its profit after tax at Rs137.9 million. Its equity is Rs224 million and the company's tea production was 15 million kg. (tsm)
