Walter Schwimmer, timid moral politician

Article Abstract:

The Council of Europe is separate from the European Union, and is linked to the European Court of Human Rights. There is concern that the moral authority of the council could be undermined by lack of a clear stance on the conflict in Chechnya, Russia. There are 41 members, including Russia. The secretary general is Walter Schwimmer, who argues that Russia has a right to defend its territorial integrity, and that Chechnya used de facto independence in a way that invited subsequent problems. This argument ignores the lack of support for Chechnya, which contributed to its weaknbess and poor performance. There is concern about the level of democracy in other states that are members of the council.

Walter Lini

Article Abstract:

Walter Lini was a Pacific Island politician who was from Vanatu, and spoke for the region as a whole against issues such as colonialsim and nuclear tests carried out by France. Vanatu was previously called the New Hebrides and was run by France and Britain together over a 74-year period. Lini was educated by missionaries and went to study to be a priest in New Zealand. He diversified the economy of Vanatu away from cocoa and copra, and the island became a tax haven as well as a location for registering for flags of convenience.
