Was Kim's anti-corruption drive an impossible dream?

Article Abstract:

South Korean President Kim Young Sam has vowed to eradicate corruption in the government and in the business sector. However, Kim, who is the first civilian to handle the post in three decades, has been encountering difficulties in his campaign since corruption is deeply rooted in Korea's society. Critics of the president claim that Kim sometimes resort to strong-hand methods in pursuing his goal. His supporters, however, attribute improvements in the government and the private sector to his leadership.

Arrest of chief's son deals new blow to Kim's regime

Article Abstract:

The arrest of the 37-year old son of President Kim Young Sam has dealt a blow to the anti-corruption campaign of the South Korean leader. Kim Hyun Chul was arrested on May 17, 1997 on charges of allegedly accepting bribes from various businesses amounting to a total of 6.6 billion Won and evasion from taxes worth about 1.4 billion Won. Analysts say the president may lose influence in policy initiatives aimed at discouraging corrupt practices.
