Mission impossible

Article Abstract:

The Thai New Aspiration Party led by 64-year-old Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, ex-army commander, won a majority of two seats in the election on November 17 1996, making Chavalit the new Prime Minister. The election result means that there will be no major changes in Thai politics. The elections were not democratic, with over $1 billion spent on bribing people to vote, intimidation, death and injuries and ballot-rigging. There needs to be a revamp of the Thai government and corruption needs to be eliminated.

Not child's play: Thai firms learn leveraged buyouts overseas are tricky

Article Abstract:

Many Thai companies have run into trouble making leveraged buyouts of US companies through poor timing and not understanding the market differences. Unicord's purchase of Bumble Bee Seafoods remains the most obvious example. However, some in the electronics business have done better, in part by keeping debt levels lower, and others are moving into European hotels. Joint venture partnerships closer to home also seem to be a winning formula for Thailand and other regional countries.
