William Hague, extremist

Article Abstract:

William Hague is leader of the British Conservative party, and has been criticized for having moved the party too far to the political right. It is unclear that he has done so, though he has made some mistakes in presentation and selection of personnel. It is wrong to argue that being opposed to involvement in European monetary union is being on the political right, since there are a number of reasons for being opposed to this project. Hague should not be labeled as on the right on the grounds that he opposes joining the single European currency.

William and the pendulum

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Conservative party is divided on the issue of European monetary union, despite a vote which showed support for the leader, William Hague's stance on this issue. Voters tend to see the party to the right of them, while New Labor has gained the middle ground. New Labor's position may weaken if the economy hits problems, and Scottish nationalism could become a problem. The pendulum may return to the Conservatives, but this may not necessarily help William Hague as leader, since he may face challenges for the leadership.

William Hague's battle plan

Article Abstract:

The leader of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, William Hague, has set out his strategy for a general election, at the party's conference in Oct 1999. He has copied a slogan 'the forces of Conservatism' from the Progressive Conservative Party in Ontario. Hague sees Blair as offering Conservative policies and rhetoric that is similar to that of the UK Conservative Party. Promises made by hague include a drop in taxes as a proportion of national income, though this is difficult to achieve with certainty since it is not easy to forecast business cycles.
