Kim Hyun Chul's corruption had been know even as his father was taking the presidential office yet intimidation kept people silent. But when the Hanbo Steel firm collapsed, the truth came out. S Korea is severely weakened now and N Korea with its famine at home, may take this opportunity to attack.

Tensions in South Korea, over possible actions by North Korea, continue, despite the death of North Korea's dictator, Kim Il Sung. These tensions deter the liberalization of the South Korean government, even though there has been an attempt at economic reform by Pres Kim Young Sam.
