As free Internet services die, online firms rethink tactics

Article Abstract:

In 2001 online companies are either beginning to change fees or are going under. Advertising on the Internet is providing an easy way for online companies to make money, and is an effective way for companies to gain exposure and establish brand identity. Recognition of a brand afteer seeing an Internet advertisement eight times rose 50% and traditional companies outpaced online companies as top Internet advertisers, according to reports by DoubleClick Inc. and Nielsen/Net Ratings.

Computer expert Steve Gibson's experience with a 13 year-old computer hacker is described, emphasizing the need for firewalls to protect ones computer. The Federal Bureau of Investigation cannot deal with every situation of computer hacking and neglected to help Gibson because damage to his business had not exceeded $5,000.
