Choreographed celebration

Article Abstract:

California's sesquicentennial celebrations will begin in Jan 1998 with events celebrating the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold, and end in 2000 around the 150th anniversary of California becoming a state. Governor Pete Wilson will play a large part in high-profile celebrations despite being out of office at the time of many of them. He has been particularly active in connection with a tall ships race planned for Jul 1999. Wilson is focusing his involvement in events in the wealthier coastal area. California's origins lie in the inland areas which will be able to attract less funding.
