Zellers unveils plan to fight Wal-Mart

Article Abstract:

Zellers, based in Brampton, Ontario, will launch Best Value format stores, or units with space of 45,000-sq-ft to 55,000-sq-ft that are located in densely-populated areas. The move, along with the planned inclusion of Martha Stewart garden brand in Zellers' garden centers, is designed to make the company more competitive with discount retail giant Wal-Mart Canada. Thomas Haig, Zellers' executive vice-president merchandising and marketing, said the Best Value stores will be "convenient community stores" that provide fewer SKUs than regular Zellers outlets.
