Ace Ltd.'s latest hurricane: Probe of industry

Article Abstract:

Commercial insurer Ace Ltd. of Bermuda with US operations based in Philadelphia reported a loss of $3 million due to the hurricane hits. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is investigating the insurance industry as the experts revealed that Ace's growth would slow as premiums are squeezed in the wake of the probe and soliciting new customers becomes riskier as a result.

Drug giants' signs of frailty

The major pharmaceutical companies of Philadelphia are under scrutiny for charging high prices and are accused of concealing study data that raises doubts about them. One such case is of Vioxx, where the clinical trials showed that the arthritis drug doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke for patients if taken for more than 18 months.

Watching insiders for signs to sell

Article Abstract:

Thomson First Call data revealed that among the companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index, sales by corporate insiders outnumbered buys by 4 to 1 on 12th August 2004. It was observed that insiders had sold 2.9 million shares of stock worth $88.5 million.
