Carpenter Technology raising some stainless steel prices

Article Abstract:

Reading, PA-based Carpenter Technology Corp. announced that beginning tomorrow, selling prices for some of its stainless steels will go up 7 cents per pound. Selling prices for other stainless grades will go up 5 cents per pound. The price increases would have an effect on all varieties of products and represent transaction price increases of 3 to 6%, according to the company. Carpenter Technology said that stainless bar and wire rod costs have been artificially depressed since 1998, and that this can be attributed mostly to what the company calls unfairly priced imports.

Patents generate hope for future advances

Article Abstract:

Philadelphia produced 1 patent for every 548 residents between 1993 and 1997, following only the San Jose, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles metro regions in patents per capita. Such drug and chemical firms as Dupont and Merck led the list of Philadelphia-area patent holders. SmithKline Beecham, which has its US headquarters and research facilities in Philadelphia, received 69 patents in 1997. Such companies as Nanosystems, which has dozens of patents for grinding drug powders into absorbable dust, have grown rapidly but not explosively since 1993.
