Despite losses, executives fared well: The firms reported drops in shares last year, but that didn't hurt the severance packages for those at the top

Article Abstract:

PMA Capital Corp. and Harleysville Group Inc. had reported unexpected losses in the year 2003 but the investors suffered a lot for the companies' stumbles. The shares of PMA, Philadelphia workers' compensation insurer, fell 64 percent in the year 2003 whereas shares of Harleysville Group shed 25 percent, but the Securities and Exchange Commission filings indicated that the companies' former executives fared just fine.

IPO: A mania that is no more

Article Abstract:

Industry analysts said that the process of investing in initial public offerings, in which investment bankers offer shares for chief executive officers, is deteriorating. IPOs in 2003 are suffering on of their worst years due to a decline in investor confidence.
