E-ZPass toll system to start in Phila. area
Article Abstract:
The E-ZPass electronic toll collection system will be launched in the Philadelphia area on Nov 11, 1998. To use E-ZPass, a commuter buys a large number of tolls at once and attaches a plastic window tag which can be read by electronic scanners in participating tollbooths. At the Atlantic City Expressway's Egg Harbor and Pleasantville tollbooths, certain lanes will be designated "E-ZPass Only." When tolls increase on Nov 30, E-ZPass motorists will get a reduced rate deducted from their plastic tags. The system is now in place in New York, and will be expanded in Pennsylvania if it is successful in the Philadelphia area.

Chief believes in Amtrak's viability
Article Abstract:
Amtrak's president, George Warrington, stated that he could make the passenger train prosper without U.S. subsidies. Amtrak had been assured by Congress and the Clinton administration that its subsidy will continue until 2002, but Warrington believes that a strategy designed to cut costs and boost revenue will help the railroad thrive even after its subsidy ends. Warrington, who did not accept the job as permanent president until right before Christmas, has begun to implement a plan that will add 20 new 150-mile-an-hour trains to replace the premium-fare Metroliners by the end of 1999.
