Franchising: a growth strategy for the 1990s

Article Abstract:

Franchising has emerged as an important alternative for managers seeking to maximize growth. Franchising is an organizational arrangement in which a product or service's maker or marketer bestows distribution rights to local entrepreneurs in exchange for royalties and adherence to prescribed operating procedures. Three forms of franchising exist: product/trade name franchising emphasizing a product's sale, business format franchising in which the entire business is part of the marketing plan and conversion franchising stressing the winning over of independent firms into the franchise system.

American competitiveness: dysfunctional stakeholder communications

Article Abstract:

The prevalence of dysfunctional managerial techniques is partly responsible for the decline of US companies' competitiveness. This dysfunctional style, called impression management, occurs when managers unconsciously conceal the truth about their performance from their higher-level evaluators. Identification of these defensive tactics can enable firms to detect unproductive behavior and then to curtail it through training programs. However, the widespread nature of these behaviors combined with the difficulty of isolating them may engender ethical problems.

The Organizational Effectiveness Menu: a device for stakeholder assessment

Article Abstract:

Organizational effectiveness (OE) can be evaluated using an OE Menu that incorporates the 60 criteria which surveyed managers judged to be most important. The OE Menu, with its mix of quantitative and qualitative standards, is likely to be more useful than univariate models that focus on one criterion. Moreover, the OE Menu's capacity to adapt to varying situations will be a further asset to managerial decision-making and planning. The OE Menu was successfully tried out at two universities.
