Houston, TX-based garbage-hauling goliath Waste Management Inc. is being sued by the Justice Department to prevent it from buying a smaller Mount Laurel based rival. The Justice Department stated that the New York Sanatation Department believes, after an extensive review of bidders, that only three companies, Browning-Ferris Industries, Eastern Environmental Services Inc. and Waste Management would be able to handle the city's 12,000-ton-a-day-disposal business. The Justice Department contends that the acqusition would severely limit competition for a $6 billion contract to be awarded by New York City. The move would also limit competition in Pennsylvania and Florida.

Walkout cuts Bell service

Bell Atlantic's directory assistance and repair services are being affected by a strike of 73,000 union employees. Most customers who dialed for directory assistance or repair service were turned away by a recorded voice telling them that a work stoppage had made many of the operators unavailable. Members of the Communications Workers of America staged a strike to primarily protest the outsourcing of work to nonunion contractors. However, both sides said they could soon reach a settlement.

Federal agency to take over United pilots' pensions

Article Abstract:

The Federal pension-insurance agency sought approval from the U.S District Court in Chicago to take over the retirement plan for 14,000 active and retired United airlines' pilots. However, the pension insurer revealed that benefits for many of the pilots would be sharply reduced from what they were promised by the airline.
