Meridian and Bucks banks return to the area-sort of

Article Abstract:

The local familiar names in Philadelphia like Meridian Banks and Bucks Country bank are planning a formal grand opening in Sept 2004 after they were believed to have disappeared in the mergers in the 1990s. Both the financial institutions were absorbed by a North Carolina-based company, Wachovia Corp. but the new institutions with the same names are not connected to Wachovia.

About Wachovia's subway cars

Article Abstract:

Altria Group Inc. and Wachovia Corp. have bought 570 New York subway cars and half of Atlanta's commuter rail tracks belong to Wachovia and American International Group Inc. The companies are not running public transportation, but are buying municipal assets, leasing them and thus saving taxes as the assets depreciate.

Banking on better service: the area's big financial centers redirect their interest

Article Abstract:

The question of whether a big bank can be a great bank is decided in Philadelphia, where the Wachovia, area's largest bank and Commerce Bank are under scrutiny. The big banks are apparently losing clients to smaller banks on account of better services provided by the latter.
