Tenn. firm to purchase MAC parent

Article Abstract:

Concord EFS Inc.of Memphis, Tennessee will buy Electronic Payment Services Inc. which operates a network of 16,000 ATMs. The Wilmington, Delaware based firm will be sold for stock worth $1 billion. The sale will not effect the company's 600 employees, according to Electronic Payment Chairman,Richard Garman. The firm has been owned by five banks:First Union Corp., PNC Bank Corp., Bank One Corp., and the two largest banks in Ohio. Electronic Payment's network, known as MAC, is one of the largest in the nation.

Drug firm's plan for site not welcome by officials

Article Abstract:

Astra Pharmaceuticals L.P. has jointly signed a nonbinding agreement with Pfizer Inc. to acquire the 312-acre Applebrook Farm of Chester County, PA, indicated facilities planning director Charles Manula. Pfizer raised concerns from local officials about the sale because it turned down a bid worth $18.2 million from a group of buyers who promised to maintain open space on most of the property. However, Manula pointed out that other hurdles have to be overcome before the transaction can be completed.
