Union maintenance workers protest dismissal

Article Abstract:

The Service Employees International Union Local 36 has been picketting daily in front of the Lafayette Building in Center City after new owners Independence Realty L.L.C. laid off 30 unionized maintenance workers and replaced them with nonunion staff. Former owner Lafayette Building Associates warned workers that the new owners may not honor the union's labor contract which will expire on October 2000.

Election may spur unions to change

Article Abstract:

Labor unions had a lower share of voter turnout in the U.S. elections than expected, indicating that the unions may be peaking in electoral strength. Unions posted a small decline in their share of overall voter turnout while helping raise overall turnout with a costly voter mobilization operation.

Morris back and running Local 115

Article Abstract:

John P. Morris has been reinstated as the head of Teamsters Local 155 following a ruling by the US District Court. Morris, who had been ousted by the international union in November, founded the local labor union in 1955.
