Molecular mechanisms of cocaine addiction

Article Abstract:

Several research groups have documented potential ways of blocking cocaine stimulation in the brain. This could revolutionize the treatment of cocaine addiction. Animal research has shown that cocaine binds to the dopamine-reuptake transporter, which results in high levels of dopamine. In particular, the D1 dopamine receptor appears to be involved in the pharmacologic activity of cocaine. Chemicals that resemble the receptor can blunt the response to cocaine. Research has also revealed that animals can be immunized against cocaine, which reduces the concentration of the drug in the brain.
