Advo's postal coup

Article Abstract:

Marking an important victory for Advo System Inc., the Postal Rate Commission (PRC) recommended to the U.S. Postal Board of Governors that the right of publications to mail Total Market Coverage (TMC) advertising to non-subscribers by second-class mail should be rescinded by the Postal Service. Advo, the largest direct mailer in the U.S., must use the higher-cost third-class mail for essentially the same type of advertising as the TMC products, so they complained to the PRC that allowing newspapers to use second-class gave an unfair advantage to newspapers. Advo was opposed by the American Newspaper Publishers Association, which is planning an appeal in federal court if the recommendation is accepted. The dispute is not simply based on Advo opposing the newspapers, because the National Newspaper Association agreed with Advo's position.

Wind of change in Aegean

Article Abstract:

Students hoping to go to a Greek university do not know the entrance requirements, which change on a yearly basis. A large number of Greek students study abroad, as places are limited in Greece. Over 150,000 prospective undergraduates compete for places in the universities and institutes of technical education. The government is planning to increase the number of places in universities and for those wishing to study with the Open university. It is anticipated there will be 60,000 places, particularly for older students, at the Open University by the year 2000.
