Anthrax and the Internet

Article Abstract:

Anthrax is a highly lethal bacteria-caused disease that was developed into a biological weapon in the 1950s. The Defense Dept believes that roughly seven nations possess anthrax as a biological warfare material. While a vaccine was developed against it sometime in the 1960s and has been in use since 1970, the Defense Secretary's decision to decision to require military service members to be inoculated against anthrax has elicited resistance from an increasing number of service members and triggered furious debate within the military and in Congress. As a result, the controversy has received wide media coverage. The Internet has been the catalyst for this controversy as it has shaped the debate about anthrax inoculation.

Let's put the salt back into making chief

Article Abstract:

Candidates for the position of chief petty officer in the Navy are required to take an examination on rating/military knowledge to gauge whether they will be eligible for consideration by a selection committee. They must also complete all the requirements outlined in the appropriate Personnel Command instruction sheets and must be recommended by their commanding officers. Some say that the test accurately reflects rating knowledge. Yet an analysis of the exam and the grading process suggests that more emphasis is placed on test scores rather than on the performance mark average.

The fall & rise of naval forward presence

Article Abstract:

The Navy adopted the forward presence strategic concept in an attempt to preserve its force structure, which was being threatened by downsizing. Forward naval forces produce very small logistics footprints abroad. This results in the simultaneous reduction of regional sensitivities toward US overseas presence and significantly reduced US exposure to terrorism. Naval forward presence is also the prime protector of US economic security. However, the Navy has not made much of an effort to justify naval forward presence on these grounds.
