Asda gives chemists a new headache

Asda is seeking to charge lower prices for non-prescription drugs than is usual under a UK price maintenance system. The UK Office of Fair Trading is investigating the industry and deregulation could result. Asda holds a 3% stake in the non-prescription drugs market and aims to increase this. Food retailers are likely to drive down the price of non-prescroption products if pharmacists do not do so first, since this trend has been evident in a number of sectors such as books and spirit drinks.

Many leading telecoms analysts believes that British Telecom is a strong candidate to bid for Cable & Wireless, along with Nynex of the US, Deutsche Telekom and Hanson. The purchase of C&W by BT would given them strength in markets such as Singapore and Hong Kong. C&W has an 80% share of Mercury Communications and a 57.5% share in Hong Kong Telecom.
