Women on the board

Article Abstract:

There are still very few women board members in large companies in the UK compared with the US. Cultural models for women allow them to be assertive and frank more easily in the US. Only some 2% of UK directors of listed companies are women. Women who have family links with a company, or who start the company themselves, are more likely to be directors. Many UK women argue that the situation is improving, though this improvement begins from a low base.

In the eye of the pay row: last week retail group Kingfisher admited that Christmas trading had been lousy. With massive private sector pay packages under attack, is the company right to make its chairman one of the UK's best-paid directors?

Article Abstract:

Kingfisher chairm Sir Geoffrey Mulcahy has received a 1.3 million pounds sterling pay package, despite the fall in the company's share price by 48%. Christmas trading was poor for the second year running, Woolworths has been affected by distribution problems and Comet lost market share to other electrical retailers. The Confederation of British Industry is reviewing director's pay structures and is proposing a code of good practice.

Mulcahy gets 18 months' grace at Kingfisher

Article Abstract:

Retail group Kingfisher has seen the departure of chief executive Alan Smith, who has been replaced by Sir Geoff Mulcahy, formerly chairman of the group. Recent financial performance has been poor, and Alan Smith spent less than two years in the job. It is thought that Sir Geoff has now been given 18 months to prove to Kingfisher's board that it was justified in retaining him.
