Audit Micro Waits for Breakthrough on Software Front

Article Abstract:

A computer-assisted audit technique (CAAT), the 'audit micro', is developed with the aim of linking the accountant's microcomputer to the client's mainframe to access the data files. There are several advantages to this system. But, there are also difficulties due to lack of client support. Methods of dealing with these problems are discussed under five topics: 1) the physical link, 2) transmission modes, 3) data transfer protocols, 4) data codes, and 5) terminal emulation packages. There may be a difference in data formats which cause a different set of problems. There is considerable development in this area because many companies have micro-computers that they are working to hook up to their mainframe. Large software houses are working on software to allow this host relationship. It is less expensive to purchase microcomputers than to purchase host terminals. Many manufacturers are making their microcomputers compatible with their larger computers.

SAA applied: micro ability for mainframe accounts

Article Abstract:

Quality Software Products' (QSP) (Newcastle, UK) OLAS is an accounting system for larger organizations that uses IBM's system application architecture (SAA) to allow microcomputer access to mainframe accounts. SAA allows the use of microcomputers as workstations for mainframes, putting processing power in the hands of users, and facilitating real-time processing. OLAS is a mainframe system accessed by microcomputers that is able to trace transactions through demand, purchase order, receipt of goods invoicing, and payment. The QSP programmers are still working on the system to get it fully into compliance with SAA and it is currently being tested in the Newcastle Health District.
