Australian-Asian cooperation increases in telecommunications

Article Abstract:

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by OTC International and the Chinese Academy of Space Technology (CAST). The MOU recognized OTC's experience in the design, installation and marketing of Earth stations. Included in the MOU were joint venture arrangements for participation in satellite communications projects in China and the purchasing of equipment and systems in connection with the manufacturing processes of the CAST. OTC has also entered into a five-year agreement to furnish satellite telecommunications to the Lao People's Republic.

Transborder use of Inmarsat terminals endorsed

Article Abstract:

An international conference recommended that governments should permit the transborder use of Inmarsat mobile satellite communications terminals. Representatives from 33 countries and 16 international organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, the EC and specialized agencies of the UN participated in the conference. The participants also recommended the facilitation of regulations on the usage of satellite communications systems for commercial and disaster relief activities.

Expanding global access to civilian and commercial remote sensing data: implications and policy issues

Article Abstract:

The commercial availability of land remote sensing data all over the world raises both positive and negative issues. New remote sensing technologies may be used to improve the socioeconomic status of mankind and to support both peace negotiations and humanitarian activities. However, national and international policies should be established to regulate commercial remote sensing services because of the inherent international security risks.
