Bridging the Gulf: a new graphic identity for Qatar delicately negotiates between cultures

Article Abstract:

Tarek Atrissi designed the logo for Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) for the marketing campaign. Atrissi is a native Arabic speaker who had looked beyond the literal meaning to abstract the beauty of the calligraphy as it would be viewed by Europeans and Americans and he incorporated elegance, distinctiveness from other national identities, and a contemporary spirit and distillation of an ancient culture in the logo.

A visit to South Africa after a gap of nine years reveals several significant changes in the country, including its most important design event, the International Design Indaba, an annual three-day conference held in Cape Town. The 9th Indaba is slicker, more forward-looking, and features some of the most important designers in the world.
