C and W 'up for grabs.'(possible bid for Cable and Wireless)

Article Abstract:

A bid may be made for Cable and Wireless, the UK telecoms group which has seen the departure of both its chief executive and its chairman. Possible suitors include British Telecommunications, Craig McCaw, and AT and T. C and W has a value of 9.5 billion pounds sterling. A company acquiring C and W would also need to make an offer for a stake held in Hong Kong Telecom. A reverse takeover is also a possibility, leaving the company acquiring C and Wwith a majority stake in a new group.

Telecoms up for grabs

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of acquisitions in the telecoms industry. New companies emerged with deregulation, but mergers are reducing the numbers of companies since there is pressure to compete internationally. Pan-European companies may not be big enough to compete in world markets, and may simply be more attractive to US companies than national players. The acquisition of Sprint by MCI WorldCom has meant that there has even been talk of BT and AT and T moving closer together.

New telecoms force emerges in $50bn tie-up

Article Abstract:

The merger of Nynex and Bell Atlantic creates a company with a market value of more than $50 billion with earnings of $3.1 billion annually and over 26 million customers. This follows the merger of Pacific Telesis and SBC Communications. There are three remaining Baby Bells which have not become involved in a merger. Ameritech appears unlikely to carry out a merger. BellSouth could consider a link with Bell-Atlantic but this may not be permitted by the regulators.
