Can a company be both low-cost- and service-oriented?

Article Abstract:

Quality service has been strongly identified with investment cost. According to industry observers, it is hard for a service-oriented company to keep operational spending low. The Mercer Management Consulting firm came up with a White Paper which details the means by which a company could improve its performance. It identified five reasons why an added service does not necessarily translate to improved performance. It listed down five building-blocks towards the delivery of service at a profit. A successful service goal for a company can mean the recovery of investment and other costs.
