Chains add fuel to forecourt battle

Article Abstract:

According to a report from the investment bank Williams de Broe, supermarkets are to grasp some 30% of the UK's overall petrol sales. At present the market leader among supermarkets is Tesco, which is currently in the throes of expanding its forecourt sites. Petrol and diesel sales account for some 12% of the overall turnover at Tesco and has a 42% share of the supermarket forecourt sector. Since 1990 supermarkets have increased their market share to 21% and any growth to come will be at the expense of small refiners and oil independents. However, the report declares that growth of non-fuel goods at petrol stations will have an effect upon small supermarkets and grocers. The non-fuel retailing sector is currently worth GB 3.1bn and is expected to rise by 12% per annum. There is some speculation in the sector that Sainsbury, which currently holds a 21% share of the market may form an alliance with a major oil company such as Shell or BP. The supermarket has not confirmed this. Somerfield is also developing plans to open up a forecourt.
