Champion of Canadian standards

Article Abstract:

Peter Chant effectively became the new chairman of the Accounting Standards Board of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants last Oct. 1995. He says that the accounting standards that exist in Canada are the highest in the world. However, he says that there are still issues that need to be addressed to further improve standards. These include harmonization of Canadian accounting standards with those of other countries and the assessment of the effect of technological changes on accounting.

Informal proceedings: why CAs should exercise caution before acting as a client's agent

Article Abstract:

Canada has implemented new rules allowing chartered accountants to appear before tax courts as agents of persons filing appeals. However, accountants should be cautious about doing so since such 'informal procedures' still follow the trial system. Accountants may be held liable for improprieties that may occur during the proceedings.
