Invasion of the megapixels

Article Abstract:

The first wave of megapixel digital cameras are being released. Just a year and a half ago, digital cameras that produced professional-quality images were too expensive for most to afford. The price/quality correlation has begun to change recently, however. The majority of the consumer cameras available on the market today have had maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, which is not enough data for most professional applications. While all the cameras on the accompanying chart have resolutions of 0.8 to 1.8 million pixels, the devices are able to store images at lower resolutions, usually 640 x 480. The low-resolution options allow the cameras to store more images. Image quality is dependent on the camera's imaging array and color bit depth. The amount of pixels a camera can capture is related directly to the size of its imaging array. The color bit depth tells the user how much color information the sensor can capture.
