The legislation making the establishment of clinical trials registry and result databases mandatory has sparked controversy among public advocacy groups and industry critics. As outlined in the enzi-Kennedy bill, greater transparency of clinical trial data appears to offer little threat to drug developers as the most sensitive business information that on early stage, exploratory trials, will remain in companies' hands.

The unique association of genomic changes in cancer cells with the disease process has led to the increased application of biomarkers that would transform the application of molecular biology to human disease.
