Companies seek share premium cancellation

Article Abstract:

British accounting standards require companies to write off goodwill against reserve accounts; however, London & Continental Advertising Holdings is attempting to obtain legal approval through the British judiciary system for writing off the goodwill accumulated as a result of merger activity against a reserve formed through the elimination of its share premium account. Normally, the share premium account of any British corporation cannot be altered without approval of the High Court. London & Continental has recorded more than 5 million pounds sterling of goodwill, while reporting pretax profits in 1984 of 1.62 million pounds sterling.

European acquisitions: the British are coming

Article Abstract:

The pace of UK acquisitions in the US has slowed in recent years as UK firms have turned their attention to establishing a presence in Continental Europe in anticipation of the single European market of 1992. UK companies for the fist time in a decade made more acquisitions in Europe than they did in the US. One factor underlying the shift in emphasis is a lack of expected success in the US market by UK firms. UK firms making acquisitions in Europe are stressing the use of financial controls and local managers in order to ensure success.
