Coping with Europe's great slowdown

Article Abstract:

The business cycle in Europe is in a recovery phase, but economic growth has been weak. Policies geared to controlling inflation have also affected growth. In addition there have been attempts to reduce budget deficits which have depressed activity since monetary policy has not been loosened to compensate. Corporate earnings could be affected leading to concern among investors. Germany is attractive to investors because interest rates can be lowered, and Spain should enjoy economic growth in 1996.

US scare hits shares

Article Abstract:

Share prices in the US have been affected by concern over corporate earnings and this has affected prices for shares elsewhere in the world. There has been a change in sentiment rather than fundamentals, according to Panmure Gordon's Ian Williams. The behavior of mutuals will influence how large any correction may be. Companies that have issued profit warnings or reported a drop in profit include Hewlett Packard and Motorola, which have both seen a drop in their share prices.
