DMA STUDY: MARKETERS MAKING MONEY ONLINE; HIGH-TECH COMPANIES LEAD THE WAY IN SHOWING INTERNET HELPS BOTTOM LINE

Article Abstract:

A study by the Direct Marketing Assn reveals that the most successful online marketers are those conducting business-to-business transactions, particularly in the high-technology area. E-commerce revenue in the computer and electronics industries is projected to grow to $395.3 billion in 2003, fueled by such firms as Dell Computer and Cisco Systems. Most view Dell as a manufacturer, but observers note it is entirely an Internet company, supporting orders, production, inventory, communication and services online. Dell's Web site generated $1 million per day five days a week immediately after debuting in Mar 1997. Eighty percent of Dell's overall business and 60 percent of its online transactions are with other businesses. Dell customizes Web sites called Premier Pages for its largest corporate customers. Cisco Systems is another early adopter of E-commerce, having started its Cisco Connection Online Web site in 1994.
