Delay threat to nuke sale

Article Abstract:

The planned privatization of nuclear power in the UK may be postponed due to an investigation of bids by National Power and PowerGen by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC). British Energy, created from combining Scottish Nuclear and Nuclear Electric, was to have been floated in summer 1996, but a delay is possible. The MMC inquiry may also affect the price that the government can obtain from the sale of British Energy, and regulations affecting the company will also affect the price.

British Energy: privatisation signs off

Article Abstract:

British Energy (BE) will be privatized in June and July 1996, with 30% of shares reserved for private investors. BE has eight nuclear power plants and some 700 million pounds sterling borrowings. BE does not plan to build new nuclear power plants and this should help the company generate cash. The company is likely to invest spare cash in non-nuclear power plants in the UK and abroad. BE has high fixed costs, so the price of electricity in the pool will have a major impact on its profits.

Nuclear power: yes please, or no thanks

Article Abstract:

British Energy is a UK nuclear power concern to be privatized by the government. The company's revenue and output will drop once power stations start to be closed. Short-term prospects for investors are good due to government incentives, but longer-term prospects depend on what the company does with cash generated. The company operates in the Scottish market and in England and Wales where wholesale prices will affect the company's revenue.
