Denim deconstructed

Article Abstract:

Americans bought 605 million pairs of jeans in 1998, and the blue jean market has seen radical transformation over recent years. Levi's has been hard hit the the changing market, with sales falling 15% between 1996 and 1998. A synthetic indigo dye was created in 1905 and was used to color jeans. The current trend favours the stiff, dark denim look, and the leg openings on a pair of jeans are important in distinguishing one use from another. The stitching on Levi's jeans has been one of its main identifiers, and the company introduced its red tab in 1936 because of imitations.

Poetry in plastic

Article Abstract:

Polypropylene is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 1998. Innovations in colour and injection-moulding techniques made since its introduction in 1957 have opened up new possibilities for the use of the plastic. Toronto, Canada-based Umbra claims to have achieved deep and highly saturated colours, resembling that of a car finish. In 1996, the US produced over 11.1 billion pounds of polypropylene.
