South Africa's stillborn recovery

Article Abstract:

The weakness of the rand has kept US corporations from investing in South Africa. The rand dropped 28% against the dollar during 1996 indicating the financial markets' loss of confidence in the government. The reluctance of US firms to enter South Africa is also attributed to high crime and corporate tax rates, political instability and the efforts of domestic corporations to block competition.
