Design for killing

Article Abstract:

Aesthetics plays a major role in the design of modern firearms. Performance remains an important consideration but the appearance of a particular gun is the biggest influence on gun buyers. The US gun market has always been traditionalist, favoring large-caliber revolvers until the introduction of innovative, polymer-framed automatic pistols from Europe in the late 1980s. This new generation of handguns caught the gun-buying public's imagination because of their lack of elegance and all-business, no-frills look.

Design's final frontier

Article Abstract:

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA, is tasked with developing products for use in the unmanned exploration of the solar system. Its designers and engineers were responsible for the creation of the Sojourner microrover used for the Pathfinder mission to Mars. The design of the Pathfinder took into account NASA's limited financial resources. JPL was able to stick to NASA's budget by combining off-the-shelf technology and proprietary engineering.
