E-COMMERCE SITES RETURN INVESTMENT: WEB DEVELOPERS SUGGEST STARTING SMALL BUT MARKETING BIG

Article Abstract:

Business-to-business electronic commerce sites have a median cost of $693,000, but returns from such sites can be achieved quickly, research shows. B-to-b e-commerce will generate over $100 billion in revenues in 1999, and $251 billion in 2000, according to Forrester Research. Exair Corp. of Cincinnati was able to achieve profits with its e-commerce site from the year it was launched, 1996. Experts recommend incremental development of online storefronts.

According to this month's Web Price Index, software developers charge the most for creating web-based database software, a project whose average price is $158,950 from a range of $45,000 to $875,000. Although there are low cost alternatives, marketers seek the most stable platforms in order to ensure scalability, or the ability to move databases to other servers.
