European monetary union: the real debate

Article Abstract:

The UK Labor and Conservative parties are concerned over the impact of planned European monetary union (EMU). Unemployment may rise as a result of EMU and there is already recession in Germany due to tight fiscal policy in order to conform to criteria for EMU. Economies can join EMU id they deflate, but this could mean mass unemployment. Other criteria could be introduced which take employment and productivity into account. There is a debate as to how unemployment can be reduced and this is linked to the debate on EMU.

Dutch get tough

Article Abstract:

Philips will no longer provide automatic support for Grundig, the company's German subsidiary. Philips holds a stake of some 33% in Grundig and has reimbursed Grundig's losses in line with an agreement. This automatic reimbursement is to end and which means that Grundig will have to shed a further 3,000 jobs after a drop in the work force to 50% of its former size in the four years to 1996. The change in attitude is seen as healthy for philips' future.
