Winnipeg delays decision on smoking bylaw

Article Abstract:

Winnipeg, Manitoba, city councilors voted to defer any decision on a proposed amendment to the Winnipeg anti-smoking bylaw by 90 days on Jul 12, 2000. The action was taken in response to strong opposition from city restaurateurs, hoteliers and night club owners. The council also voted to commission another study on the impact of smoking in public places frequented by children. They also requested more information on the benefits of air-filtration and ventilation systems, which is a solution that the hospitality industry has espoused.

Football finances need tackling

Article Abstract:

English soccer clubs face rapidly increasing wage costs, and English clubs reported operating losses of 42.6 million pounds sterling in 1996 to 1997, according to Deloitte and Touche. Five soccer clubs achieved operating profits of over 5 million pounds sterling in 1996-1997 and the previous season. Four of the five clubs, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Aston Villa, are quoted on the UK stock market. Meanwhile, the gap between Premier League clubs and other clubs is widening.

New methods of evaluating physical demand at work areas

Article Abstract:

Breaking down movements into micromovements and testing load stresses on affected body parts are part of the refinements made in the MTM-UAS system of risk assessment in ergonomic designs. This system of load evaluation also takes into consideration time factors, such as duration and frequency, to assess load on a micromovement.
