Foreign affairs

Article Abstract:

Companies that are under pressure to increase their sales and profits may be able to do so by expanding into foreign markets. This move can be very risky, but firms may be able to minimize major risks and benefit from economies of scale in production, procurement and R&D by limiting their overseas operations to their own sectors. One way of entering foreign markets is through the import/export business. It entails limited risks, but may also present such problems as high tariffs imposed by attractive markets and the possibility of having to follow customers. International companies of all types face other challenges, including understanding the particular needs and preferences of each market and dealing with the economic, political and social developments in the countries where they do business. To succeed overseas, companies need detailed research, sufficient preparation and strong management commitment.

The heritability of IQ

Article Abstract:

There are still very mixed views about the factors which determine an individual's IQ. Some research has indicated that family environment may play a key role, but other research has focused on the possibility of maternal effects having a stronger influence. Indeed, a statistical analysis indicates that 20% of twin and 5% of sibling covariance in IQ may be attributable to maternal effects. These findings raise doubts about traditional views about the impact of evolution on IQ.
