GE 'encourages' suppliers to move overseas - or else

Article Abstract:

Labor unions and public interest groups are vociferously protesting Fairfield, CT-based General Electric's (GE) strategy of exporting thousands of US jobs overseas. GE has eliminated more than 160,000 jobs in the US since 1985. The unions obtained a copy of an internal memo where the manufacturer exhorted its parts suppliers to migrate to foreign shores to exploit low-wage conditions. Parts suppliers and subcontractors have made it known that GE has pressured them to migrate to Mexico or lose GE's business. GE countered the allegations by pointing out that it is facing pressure to continually cut costs and maintain competitiveness in an increasingly competitive market.

Ogilvy axes 70 staffers to reduce 'redundancies'

Ogilvy PR Worldwide CEO Bob Seltzer has laid off seventy staffers in its offices in San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, and Atlanta, GA. The decision is aimed at eliminating redundancies that exist between its own high-tech practice and its Alexander Ogilvy operation to better deal with the market downturn. sandra Moreland, President of AO's Eastern Region, becomes President of the Group while Pam Alexander remains CEO of Alexander Ogilvy, the official name of Ogilvy's high-tech practice.

GE says 'pack up and leave'

Article Abstract:

General Electric (GE) CEO Jack Welch has been highly consistent regarding job security policy throughout his 20-year tenure at the company. In terms of employment, his philosophy appears to be 'the fewer, the better.' This is clearly demonstrated in the company's so-called migration seminars for suppliers, which have reportedly been 'strongly encouraged' to relocate their plant to low-wage countries such as Mexico or lose GE's business.
