Home improvement budgets up 5%

Article Abstract:

The fifth annual American Express Retail Index on home improvement indicates that US household budgets for home improvement projects surpassed the national economy to reach an average of $2,288 per household, or a 5% increase over the 1999 level. The survey also found that although the number of Americans planning home improvement projects remained steady at 39%, they aim to invest more money on multiple projects including kitchen/bathroom remodeling and landscaping.

American Express reports back to school budgets are at a five year high

Article Abstract:

Back-to-school spending among American parents and teenagers will increase by 12% or $455 in 1999 compared to 1998 figures, according to the latest American Express Retail Index. An average of $342 will be set aside by parents for back-to-school shopping budget, with an additional $113 coming from 86% of teenagers. Most of the transactions for back-to-school shopping is being conducted in more traditional retail outlets. Clothes dominate back-to-school shopping.

Home improvement industry growing

Article Abstract:

A study done by the Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) shows that sales of home improvement products reached $162.9 billion in 1999, a 9.5% increase from the previous period. The HIRI estimates that growth would average 4.2% during the next five years. The report adds that there is also a booming sales in 'buy-it-yourself' products, with consumers buying the products themselves and letting others install it for them.
