Germany: swallowing an unpalatable pill

Article Abstract:

Germany faces a number of challenges such as funding reunification, and a rise in the value of the German mark. Labor unions have negotiated wage rises above the level of inflation and this has made employing labor very expensive due to additional costs from social insurance. Jobs have been shed, and productivity has been increased, which has led to a reduction in unit labor costs, despite pay rises. Unions are more prepared to accept flexible working practices, though they have not reached levels of acceptance found in the UK.
