European pensions: time bomb

Article Abstract:

The debt levels of some countries in Europe could rise by 100% due to the cost of state pension provision, according to Lloyds Bank's Patrick Foley. Italy, Germany and France are likely to face problems though the UK is not likely to be affected. Private pension provision is more common in the UK, state pensions are lower, and demographic factors are less problematic. Pensions could be made less generous and retirement ages could be raised to tackle this problem.

Self assured

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom self-invested personal pensions (Sipps) are appropriate for wealthy, sophisticated investors who have greater flexibility and control and do not have to pay hidden charges that may come with conventional pensions. These pensions have become popular with senior executives, the self employed, and professionals with high incomes. Sipps can help in delaying the purchase of an annuity, and they are suited to income drawdown because they are flexible.
